Critical Machine Room Ammonia Safety Controls

Storm Technologies recently completed a project to update critical safety related controls in 2 engine rooms for one of our customers in the food industry. Our initial step in this project was to complete an evaluation of the existing controls and emergency NH3 response capabilities. Results were documented with corresponding remediation actions to meet current International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) 2-2014 and OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) [29 CFR 1910.119] requirements. Partnering with the onsite refrigeration contractor, electrician, and roofing teams Storm Technologies led this project as the prime contractor delivering on time and within budget. Both engine room's ventilation needed to be upgraded, ammonia detection and alarming were lacking, and emergency shutdown capabilities had not been implemented.

Engine rooms had the following equipment installed:

1. Additional louvers, supply fans, and exhaust fans installed to meet/exceed requirements

2. Additional NH3 detection and alarming

3. Newly built control panels
